Cold Room/ Freezer: What is the best mode of preserving frozen foods?

by Tolulope Akinruli

Are you a frozen food business owner or do you just want to venture into it and you might be wondering what method is best for preserving your frozen foods. This article gives you answers to all your doubts, Entrepreneurng report.

A cold room is a refrigerated house kept at an iced low temperature and often powered artificially. The cold room is always in form of a warehouse and it is used to keep perishable products for longer periods just like your frozen foods. A cold room might also be in form of a multiplex condensing house, remote condensing house, or a container.

While freezer on the other hand Is a device that is also used for freezing food products and its temperature is kept below freezing point.

One might say a cold room and a freezer do the same function by slowing down the bacteria on food for it to get preserved over a long period. That is very correct.

When venturing into a frozen food business in Nigeria most especially on a Large scale term here are some factors to consider when choosing the method of preservation for your product:

1. Size and capacity

When comparing the size and capacity of a cold room and a freezer. The cold room is bigger and will house more products than a freezer. For example, if you have a large stock like 50 cartons of chicken, gizzard 10 cartons, turkey 70 cartons, and the likes. A freezer will be too small and will not be efficient for your business.

2. Costing or Affordability

One might say having a cold room is more expensive than having a freezer. Constructing a cold room cost millions of naira ( between #4,000000- #6,000000 million) but has a longer lifespan of about 20 years. With a minimum of #50,000 or more, you can get just one refrigerator. As a frozen business expert you need more than just one refrigerator, at least for a start you need a minimum of 5-10 freezers. So if we multiply #50,000 by 10 that will be #500, 000. So this implies that beginners in this business who cannot afford to have a cold room can use a refrigerator as a substitute.

3. Movability

You cannot easily move a cold room from one place to another but a freezer can easily be moved from one place to another Incase a need may arise in the future to move your business to another location entirely.

4. Maintenance

The cost of maintaining a cold room is far greater because you need to employ more than one worker when choosing this medium for your frozen food business. While freezers can be easily maintained.

In conclusion, looking at the above factors we could see that using a freezer is easier, cost-effective, and affordable compared to a cold room. In my own opinion, a cold room is far better because it makes it easier for you to expand your business very easily to any level in the future but needs a very huge amount of capital to use. But beginners in the business who does not have a huge capital can go for the use of freezers.
