With fuel scarcity wreaking havoc and prices skyrocketing, Nigerians are once again in a unique survival position. Fuel stations now resemble lively marketplaces, with huge lines and confusion the rule of the day, but commuters must find methods to survive and continue their everyday lives.

Here are five approaches to surviving the present fuel scarcity:

Fuel scarcity

Plan efficiently

Planning your journeys efficiently is one method to survive during a fuel shortage. By combining errands and optimising your routes, you can reduce the distance travelled and the rate of refuelling. It’s all about getting the most out of each travel and prioritising key journeys.

Carpooling

Another option for surviving a fuel shortage is to share rides with colleagues, relatives, or acquaintances on your way to your destination. This reduces the cost of transit by splitting fuel expenditures in half, lowering costs on both ends.

Beat the night time rush

As 5:00-6:00 p.m. approaches, every bus stop is crowded with passengers eager to get home, resulting in even higher transportation charges. Avoid crowds and price increases by completing your tasks at work on time. Leave early to avoid the evening rush and enjoy a smoother drive home before prices spike.

Make Use of Public Transportation

It wouldn’t harm to park your car for a bit during a period of gasoline scarcity and take public transport, BRT, or even the train if it runs along the route you planned. This would also cut lineups at fuel stations, which cause traffic.

Beat the morning rush

Transport fares in Lagos are still reasonable in the early morning hours. With fewer people and clear roads, now is the best time to save money on your commute. Leave early to avoid crowds and higher prices later in the day. And if you need to obtain fuel for personal use or vehicle, you need to set out early.
