The Borno and Taraba State Governments have stepped up to support flood victims in Mokwa, Niger State, following the recent disaster that displaced thousands and left widespread destruction.

On a condolence visit to Governor Umar Bago in Minna, Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, announced a ₦300 million donation to assist with relief and recovery efforts. He emphasized that the gesture was to bolster Niger State’s response to the devastating flood and alleviate the hardship faced by affected residents.

Zulum used the opportunity to call on state governments across Nigeria to work together in tackling the effects of climate change, which he said continues to drive natural disasters like floods. He also urged the Federal Government to implement a more structured and effective disaster management framework.

Governor Bago, in his response, expressed gratitude for the donation, describing it as both timely and heartfelt. He praised Zulum’s leadership, commitment, and compassion during challenging times.

In a separate development, a delegation from the Taraba State Government, led by Senator Manu Haruna, also visited Minna and donated ₦50 million to the flood victims on behalf of Governor Agbu Kefas and the people of Taraba. According to Bago’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the delegation conveyed Taraba’s solidarity and condolences to the victims and families affected by the disaster.

The Nigerian Red Cross Society also joined relief efforts by distributing essential non-food items to 100 affected households. According to a statement from the organisation’s Head of Communications, Chima Nwankwo, each household received camp beds, mats, blankets, water storage containers, mobile taps, and Aquatabs for water purification.

The Red Cross noted that its team is working closely with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide ongoing support and coordinate future humanitarian interventions.
