Baseball legend One of the finest athletes in sports history, Willie Mays was adored for his graceful athleticism and amazing skill. His family revealed that he passed away on Tuesday at the age of 93. In a statement released in tandem with the San Francisco Giants, Mays’ old organisation, his family acknowledged the baseball legend’s passing.

Son Michael Mays said in the statement, “My father has passed away peacefully and among loved ones.” From the bottom of my broken heart, I want to thank each and every one of you for your unflinching love for him over the years.

His lifeblood has been you. Mays, the first Black player to captain a Major League Baseball team, had an impact that went well beyond baseball, according to Giants chairman Greg Johnson.
Johnson declared, “We have lost a true legend today.” “Willie Mays stands out among the greatest baseball players of all time because of his exceptional skill, sharp mind, charisma, and limitless delight.

“He had a significant impact on American culture as well as baseball as a game. He was a hero and an inspiration who will always be greatly missed. Centre fielder Mays was praised by Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred as a star who motivated “generations of players and fans.”

“Watching Willie Mays dominate the game in every way imaginable was an incredible experience that cannot be adequately described by his incredible achievements and statistics,” Manfred remarked.

“I offer my sincere condolences to Willie’s family, his teammates, Giants supporters worldwide, and his innumerable admirers on behalf of Major League Baseball.” Born in Alabama in 1931, Mays—fondly called the “Say Hey Kid”—started playing baseball with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League in 1948.

The Giants, who were then based in New York, signed him in 1950. He made his debut that season, dazzling with 20 home runs, and earned Rookie of the Year. He contributed to the Giants’ victory in the World Series three years later, which was their final baseball championship before moving to San Francisco.

During a game one victory in the 1954 World Series, Mays executed one of the most iconic plays in baseball history—a breathtaking over-the-shoulder catch that became known as just “The Catch.”

The Giants defeated the Cleveland Indians 5-2 in extra innings after that incredible eighth-inning play that tied the game at 2-2. Later, Mays would gently downplay his accomplishments, claiming he never kept track of the several highlights-worthy catches and hits he had, preferring to focus on winning. He previously told an interviewer, “I wasn’t into that, so I can’t tell you about moments.”

His simple philosophy of baseball was the foundation of his approach. “I hit the ball that they threw. He famously remarked, “They hit the ball, I catch it.” Mays played for the Giants from 1951 to 1972 before announcing his retirement from baseball in 1973, Willie Mays.

He finished his career with the New York Mets. In addition to leading the Giants to the World Series in 1954, he was named the Most Valuable Player twice, eleven years apart. He ranks sixth all-time in MLB with 660 home runs. In 1979, the 24-time All-Star was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Willie Mays

US President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015. Obama posted on X, the former Twitter platform, on Tuesday, saying, “Willie Mays wasn’t just a singular athlete, blessed with an unmatched combination of grace, skill and power.” In addition, he was incredibly kind and giving, serving as an example for a whole generation.
