After two decades, Noah Lyles won the sprinting gold at the Paris Olympics by a tiny margin on Sunday, giving the United States its first sprinting trophy back.
In the most competitive Olympic 100-meter race in contemporary memory, Lyles prevailed against Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson by a mere 5,000th of a second.
Both racers’ rounded-up times were 9.79 seconds, however Lyles’ 9.790 seconds won out by the narrowest of margins over Thompson’s 9.789 seconds.
His victory is among the greatest in Olympic history, only surpassed by Usain Bolt’s 9.63-second record from the London 2012 Games.
The top 5 fastest men in 2024 are as follows:
1. United States’ Noah Lyles in 9.79 seconds
2. Jamaican Kishane Thompson – 9.79
3. Fred Kerley – 9.81 (United States)
4. South Africa’s Akani Simbine – 9.82
