Private sector leaders in Nigeria have joined forces to host an Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) forum with the objective of transforming their businesses for a better future and advancing sustainable and responsible business practices.
This collaborative effort involves key organizations, including the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), British American Tobacco (Nigeria) Limited, the Nigerian Climate Information Centre (NCIC), Nigerian Bottling Company, Stanbic IBTC, and others.
Under the theme, “Is the Private Sector Accountable: A Case for Sustainable Practices,” the forum, scheduled for November 8 in Lagos, aims to unite private sector stakeholders in a commitment to operate in a socially responsible manner.
Odiri Erewa-Meggison, the External Affairs Director at British American Tobacco Nigeria and West and Central Africa, emphasized the importance of balancing business growth with environmental protection. She highlighted the need to address existing gaps, especially in organizations that operate without social and environmental responsibility and accountability. The forum aims to establish a measurable roadmap for holding these organizations accountable and ensuring responsible practices.
Michael Ajayi, the Country Director of Enactus Nigeria, pointed out that the consortium of private sector organizations is taking a leading role in promoting sustainable business practices. The primary goal is to hold themselves accountable, drive discussions on responsible practices, and encourage private sector entities to prioritize establishing effective governance structures. Additionally, they seek to invest in technology and innovation that supports a just transition while mitigating the potential negative impacts of human-induced climate change.
This initiative reflects a commitment from the private sector to embrace sustainable business practices, social responsibility, and environmental accountability. It also underscores the importance of aligning business growth with the protection of the environment and fostering a culture of responsible corporate citizenship.
