Kainji lake, the West Africa Conservation Network (WACN), an organization based in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, dedicated to environmental and wildlife preservation, has initiated a partnership with the Nigeria National Park Service to revitalize the Kainji Lake National Park.

Covering over 2000 square miles (5000 square kilometers) across Niger and Kwara states, the park is home to various wildlife species including lions, buffaloes, hippos, leopards, and some elephants.

On October 27, 2023, the international organization entered into a 31-year co-management agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigeria National Park Service to safeguard and restore the park in northwestern Nigeria during the period outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding.

Through the WACN Kainji Lake National Park Project, the organization aims to address the park’s current security challenges over the next decade by collaborating with partners who can contribute significant value to the project.

Patrick Egwu, the founder of WACN, stated that the organization’s conservation model focuses on securing, protecting, and restoring wilderness areas for the benefit of rural communities and the nation as a whole.
