The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced plans to resume crude oil drilling operations in Northern Nigeria, specifically at the Kolmani oil field located on the border between Bauchi and Gombe States.

This decision marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its oil production beyond the traditional southern regions.

The Kolmani project was initially inaugurated in November 2022 under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration but experienced a two-year hiatus due to various challenges. The resumption of drilling activities is scheduled for June 2025, as confirmed by NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, during a recent interview.

In addition to restarting oil drilling, NNPCL is committed to completing the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project. This 614-kilometre pipeline is designed to transport natural gas from Ajaokuta through Abuja and Kaduna to Kano, aiming to boost industrial activities and energy supply in the northern region.

The Kolmani oil field is estimated to hold over one billion barrels of crude oil and 500 billion cubic feet of gas, attracting significant investment and promising substantial economic benefits for the region.

The revival of these projects is expected to stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and enhance energy security in Nigeria.

Furthermore, NNPCL has resolved previous disagreements with the Dangote Refinery, paving the way for improved collaboration in Nigeria’s oil sector.

Ojulari emphasised the importance of unity and cooperation among stakeholders to ensure the success of these initiatives and the overall development of the nation’s energy infrastructure.
