Microsoft has just announced the new Surface Laptop 5, and there are some details to be aware of, even though the devices retain the same design and dimensions.
The only difference on the outside is a new Sage Green colourway, but it’s unclear whether this will be available in Singapore.
Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 5 is still available in two sizes: 13.5 and 15 inches. The PixelSense display has remained largely unchanged, with the same 3:2 aspect ratio, resolution, and pixel density.
The big difference is on the inside. Microsoft used to offer both Intel and AMD processors, but the Surface Laptop 5 will only be available with Intel.
When asked about the lack of AMD options, Microsoft’s vice president of program management, Pete Kyriacou, stated:
We’re great partners with AMD, and we’ll continue to work with them on longer-term projects, but we don’t have AMD models for Laptop 5.
Inside the Surface Laptop 5 are Intel’s 12th generation Core Alder Lake processors. You can select either the Core i5-1235U or the more powerful Core i7-1265U processor. This can be combined with up to 32GB LPDDR5 memory and 1TB SSD storage.
The only significant change is adding a USB-C port supporting Thunderbolt 4. This allows it to work well with various accessories, such as external graphics docks and fast external SSD storage devices.
Pricing and accessibility
The Surface Laptop 5 will be available on October 25, 2022.
The 13.5-inch model costs S$1,588, and the 15-inch model costs S$2,038. They are available from the Microsoft online store.
