Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTBank) has confirmed an attempt to breach its website domain but assured customers that their data remains secure.
The incident took place on Wednesday, a day after the bank renewed its domain name, causing a brief disruption that temporarily prevented customers from accessing online services.
This led to widespread concerns and reports that the bank’s website might have been cloned, raising fears about potential data breaches.
In a statement released on Thursday, GTBank’s management clarified that the hacking attempt was unsuccessful and that the website was not cloned.
The bank emphasized that customer data was not compromised, as such information is not stored on their website.
The statement, titled “Alleged Web Domain Hack: GTBank Provides Clarity,” addressed the situation: “Our attention has been drawn to reports in the media alleging that hackers have seized the bank’s website, cloned it, and intercepted customer data.
“While there was an isolated incident of an attempt to compromise our website domain, we would like to assure all our customers and stakeholders that the bank’s website has not been cloned and that we do not store customer information on our website, and as such, there has been no instance of compromise of customer data.”
GTBank also mentioned that their Information Security team is working diligently to restore domain settings, and the website is expected to be fully functional shortly.
The bank reiterated its commitment to protecting customer data and urged customers to remain confident in their security measures.
The statement concluded by reassuring customers: “Our dedicated team of Information Security Experts is currently working round the clock to restore domain settings, and we can assure our customers that our website will be up shortly.
“We urge all our customers to please disregard the claims in these media reports and assure you of our unwavering commitment to safeguarding customer data. Thank you for your continued support.”
