Net migration counts how many individuals enter certain nations (immigrants) and how many leave (emigrants). This calculation includes both citizens and non-citizens and normally lasts one year. International migration has increased dramatically over time.
In 2020, 281 million individuals migrated worldwide, accounting for 3.6% of the global population. This figure represents an increase of 128 million migrants since 1990, more than double the total in 1970.
People migrate for a variety of reasons, including personal ambitions and life obstacles. Wealthier countries, on the other hand, tend to attract more migrants. In 2020, Europe hosted 86.7 million migrants, with Asia following closely behind with 85.6 million.
The United States had the biggest number of international migrants in the world, with approximately 51 million. Latin America and the Caribbean also saw substantial expansion in their migrant population, which has nearly doubled since 2005.
Using statistics from the World Bank, which analyses net migration figures for countries from 1960 to 2022, below are the five countries with the most net migration as of 2022:

The net migration rate is three migrants for one thousand people.
