The Bayelsa State government has implemented a strategic response framework to combat Monkeypox in the predominantly riverine state. According to the Commissioner for Health, Prof Seiyefa Brisibe, the state has reported 83 suspected cases and five confirmed cases, with no deaths reported.
He also stated that the Ministry of Health is increasing the ability of health workers throughout the state by completing comprehensive training programs to improve their diagnostic, treatment, and prevention skills as a frontline defence.
Brisibe also stated that the state had intensified radio, social media, and community-based initiatives to educate locals about Mpox, its symptoms, mode of transmission, and preventive measures. He stated that the state is purchasing personal protection equipment for all healthcare facilities in the state to protect healthcare personnel and help response efforts.
According to him, “the state is collaborating with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Federal Ministry of Health to expedite the acquisition of Mpox vaccines, ensuring that the state is well prepared once the vaccines become available.”
“Also, the ministry has activated all emergency preparedness measures including the formation of rapid response teams and mobilisation of necessary resources to forestall the spread of the disease.”
Brisibe reaffirmed the public of the government’s unwavering commitment to protecting the health of all inhabitants, adding, “We are leaving no stone unturned in our efforts to combat Mpox.” He advised households to follow recommended preventive measures such as regular hand washing, safe sexual activity, and avoiding close contact with anyone who have Mpox symptoms
