Nigeria’s delegation was led by flagbearer Tobi Amusan and team captain Anuoluwapo Opeyori at the vibrant and historic opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics on Friday night.
Athletes applauded along the Seine as over 200 national delegations sailed through the heart of Paris, passing iconic buildings like the Musée d’Orsay, the Louvre, and Notre-Dame Cathedral, despite the night’s heavy rain.
The opening ceremony of the Summer Games took place outside of a stadium for the first time ever. Alongside the delegation as they sailed across was Nigeria, dressed in vibrant, well-groomed green and white outfits. Opeyori assisted Amusan in hoisting the flag.
In the meantime, 88 competitors from Team Nigeria—63 women and 25 men—will participate in 12 sports in the Olympics in Paris. In the 100 years after the last time the Olympics were held in Paris, around 10,500 athletes are expected to compete.
The first of the 329 gold medals will be given out on Saturday, August 11 is when the Games will conclude. The Games began on Wednesday. (NAN)
