Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has pardoned Segun Olowookere, who was condemned to death in 2014 for stealing chicken and eggs at the age of 17.
Olowookere‘s case received much attention because his parents made a public plea for mercy, emphasising how harsh his penalty was.
In response, Governor Adeleke used his prerogative of mercy to pardon Olowookere and fifty-two other prisoners under the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy’s recommendations.
The appropriate jail officials have confirmed the governor’s decision, which was formally announced in a letter dated December 24, 2024.
Inmates convicted of simple offences who have completed significant portions of their sentences and those who have been sentenced to death but have served at least 10 years in prison are the targets of this act of clemency, which is part of a larger effort to commemorate the 2024 Christmas holiday.
Governor Adeleke’s move demonstrates his dedication to justice reform and treating criminals humanely, especially when the penalty is excessive for the offence. Human rights activists and the general public have praised this action, seeing it as a step towards a more just legal system.
