The Nigerian Senate has ordered Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, to immediately stop all ongoing property demolitions in Abuja, with the exception of those required by court orders.
Concerns regarding the demolitions’ legality and the problems they caused the impacted residents led to this judgement.
Under the direction of Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, an ad hoc committee has been formed to investigate the demolition actions. The group is anticipated to present its findings in two weeks.
After Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP-FCT) brought attention to the anomalies and negative effects of the demolitions, the Senate passed a resolution. The committee will interact with the FCT administration to guarantee due process and address the concerns of individuals impacted.
Minister Wike has responded by stating that buildings that were constructed unlawfully on government property will continue to be demolished, stressing the importance of following the law.
The Senate is trying to strike a balance between legal progress and the welfare of locals, and this development reflects the continuous discussion about property rights and urban planning in Abuja.
