According to the Nigerian Copyright Commission, the nation is stepping up its anti-piracy campaign and enforcing harsher punishments for copyright violations and abuse of all literary works, Entrepreneurng report.

The NCC’s Director-General, Dr. John Asein, announced this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja in honor of the annual April 23 World Book and Copyright Day.

While regretting the instances of piracy in the nation, Asien went on to say that the new Copyright Act 2022 will strengthen author rights and address the problems associated with digital transmission and online exploitation of works.

“The Commission is stepping up proactive enforcement actions and improving collective management of rights in order to ensure a sufficient return on intellectual and financial investment in all creative sectors.”

As a prelude to the comprehensive national anti-piracy push, the Commission has launched a number of public education and enlightenment programs in collaboration with various stakeholders and pertinent institutions.

The public is consequently recommended to refrain from all forms of copyright infringements and abuses because of the harsher penalties available under the new Act for criminal breaches, he said.

Additionally, he urged writers and other interested parties to work with the commission to tell the copyright story and highlight the negative effects of piracy and other copyright breaches.

“He emphasized the necessity to recognize linguistic diversity and the significance of maintaining, developing, and supporting the use of indigenous languages in literature and other creative works in line with the 2023 theme, “Indigenous Languages!”

Together, he said, “let us investigate alternative languages and give voice to indigenous cultures in our literature, music, plays, and films.

He continued by saying that with more than 600 indigenous languages, Nigeria has a lot to teach the world about indigenous languages and related expertise.

In conclusion, the head of NCC claimed that in order to develop the necessary Regulations and Guidelines for implementing the Act’s provisions on the protection of folkloric expressions, they had engaged with pertinent parties.
