World Autism Day, the Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District and First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, emphasized the significance of early detection of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), stating that it can lead to significant improvements in the abilities of individuals on the autism spectrum. She conveyed this message on World Autism Awareness Day, observed annually on April 2.

In her statement, she acknowledged the challenges faced by families with autistic loved ones and commended their enduring love and dedication. She also highlighted the vital role of community organizations in offering support, resources, and opportunities for individuals with autism and their families.

Furthermore, Sen. Tinubu stressed the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in ensuring that individuals with autism can reach their full potential, urging parents and caregivers to remain vigilant about developmental milestones and seek professional assistance if any concerns arise (World Autism Day).

She also called for increased expressions of love and collective support from society to help people with ASD overcome challenges and thrive. Sen. Tinubu emphasized the need to create a world where individuals, regardless of their challenges, are empowered, included, and celebrated for their unique abilities.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global prevalence of autism is estimated to be about one in 160 children, with Nigeria’s estimated prevalence at one in 88 children. However, due to a lack of awareness and understanding about autism, many cases go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

The WHO also noted that around 31 percent of individuals with autism worldwide also have an intellectual disability. In 2007, the UN General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, aiming to raise awareness about autism globally ( world autism day).

This year’s observance will, for the first time, aim to provide a comprehensive global perspective on the state of autism awareness from the viewpoint of autistic individuals themselves.
