A woman who has yet to be named died after falling into the Lagos lagoon near the Third Mainland Bridge. According to an eyewitness, the event happened at 4 p.m. on the bridge near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) shoreline.

It was said that marine police officers stationed in the region responded quickly to the incident and eventually recovered the body despite rescue efforts. As of press time, the immediate and remote causes of the tragedy could not be determined, but eyewitnesses suspected suicide.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Police Command, verified the event Friday. He added that, despite efforts by marine police officers to save her, medical personnel from the University of Lagos confirmed her death upon arrival.

Hundeyin stated that the deceased’s body had been transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) Mortuary in Yaba for preservation. “On March 13, 2025, at around 1600 hours, an unnamed woman reportedly leaped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the water near the UNILAG shoreline.

“She was found at the University of Lagos shore slipway by a team of marine police personnel stationed nearby. Despite their attempts, a team of UNILAG medical specialists verified her death in front of Sabo Police Division officials. “Her body has been evacuated to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) Mortuary in Yaba, Lagos, for preservation.”
