Why I want to be Edo gov from Nov 12 – LP aspirant Tom Iseghohi

by Tolulope Akinruli

Tom Iseghohi, a leading governorship aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party (LP) in Edo State, has made a resolute declaration to vie for the position and succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki on November 12, 2024. This announcement comes with a clear mission – to usher in good governance, ensure prudent management of abundant resources, and drive substantial infrastructural development in the South-south state.

Hailing from Uromi in the Edo Central Senatorial District, Iseghohi officially communicated his intent during a significant event at the LP’s secretariat in Benin City over the weekend. The occasion marked his official entry into the race for the governorship, and he expressed optimism about emerging victorious during the opposition party’s primary election scheduled for February 2024.

A distinguished figure, Iseghohi, formerly the Group Managing Director of the Transnational Corporation of Nigeria until 2014, is also the Chairman of Emerging Global Capital. In framing his candidacy, he clarified, “I am applying for a job, not declaring.” Drawing a parallel with corporate dynamics, he likened the process to applying for a nomination to represent the Labour Party in the gubernatorial race, Tom Iseghohi.

In his address, Iseghohi reminisced about a time when Edo State thrived under the leadership of visionaries like Samuel Ogbemudia and Prof. Ambrose Alli. He painted a vivid picture of an era when Edo citizens were known for their strength, hard work, and pride in themselves, their families, and their communities. The Edo person, he emphasized, was successful, respected, and a source of pride for being an Edo man.

However, Iseghohi acknowledged that the state now stands at a crossroads, lamenting the departure from the principles of good governance, progress, and justice that characterized its glorious past. Despite challenges, he remained confident that Edo could reclaim its former glory through a commitment to fairness, equity, and justice,  Tom Iseghohi.

“I want to lead a team to return Edo from last back to first,” he declared. Expressing concern over the decline in Edo’s fortunes, Iseghohi highlighted his vision to restore the legacy of safety and prosperity that the state once enjoyed. He asserted his candidacy as a means to address the prevailing issues of poverty, sickness, and despair.

Emphasizing his global achievements, Iseghohi stated that he had risen to the highest global status while still proudly identifying with Nigeria and Edo State. He envisioned Edo becoming a shining star once again, a source of pride for its residents.

Despite the presence of other formidable aspirants on the LP’s platform, Iseghohi dismissed concerns about entering the race late. He was welcomed by the Edo Chairman of the party, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi, and his executive members, who assured a level playing field for all aspirants.

With a track record as a transformation expert, Iseghohi pledged to unveil his proposed contract (manifesto) for Edo residents in the coming days. He positioned himself as the solution to the state’s challenges, advocating for an end to the tenure of what he referred to as “old and recycled recurring decimals” who, in his view, have failed the people, Tom Iseghohi.

In urging Edo indigenes to join his political family, Iseghohi outlined a promise of significant positive changes within two to three years if elected. He concluded by stressing the importance of truth, transparency, and accountability in governance, declaring that the Edo person deserves leadership that prioritizes safety, security, infrastructure, unity, education, healthcare, housing, and employment.
