Faith Odunsi, a brilliant Nigerian student, has etched her name in history after winning the prestigious Global Open Mathematics Competition, surpassing competitors from major world powers, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and China.

Her exceptional performance throughout the competition set her apart, but it wasn’t until the final round—where she answered more questions than her rivals—that she realised victory was within her grasp.

A Historic Triumph

In 2021, at just 15 years old, Faith Odunsi stunned the world by emerging victorious in the Global Open Mathematics Competition.

She outperformed contestants from 193 countries, solving complex mathematical problems with remarkable speed and precision. Her efforts earned her not only global recognition but also a $1,000 prize.

Unmatched Speed and Accuracy

Faith’s defining moment came when she solved an astounding 19 math questions in just one minute, an achievement that left her competitors trailing behind. Her win placed Nigeria in the spotlight, proving that African students can excel on the global stage.

Faith’s Journey to Victory

Hailing from Ijebu, Ogun State, Faith was an SS3 student at the time of the competition. In an interview with The Punch, she reflected on her experience, calling it a “tough competition” that ultimately brought her a deep sense of honour and joy.

Describing the different stages of the contest, she explained in an interview with The Punch: “In the first stage, there was a computer-based test, and we had to answer many questions in one hour. My score in the test was 66. The second stage took the same format, and I also scored 66. The quarter and semi-finals were on Microsoft Teams. We were asked questions and had to input our answers; the first to provide the correct answer got 10 points.”

Balancing Academics and Preparation

Despite the intense preparation required, Faith ensured that the competition did not disrupt her regular schoolwork. She revealed that after school hours, she had additional coaching sessions with her teacher, who guided her through complex mathematical concepts.

She also dedicated late-night hours—from 11 PM to 12 AM—to self-study, a testament to her discipline and commitment.

A Star on the Global Stage

Faith’s victory quickly gained traction on social media, with people across the world celebrating her incredible achievement. Her success was not just a personal win but a proud moment for Nigeria, showcasing the immense potential of African students in STEM fields.

A Bright Future Ahead

Faith Odunsi’s brilliance has continued to open doors for her. She is currently pursuing her studies on a scholarship at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), a world-renowned institution for scientific and mathematical excellence.

Her journey serves as an inspiration to young students across Nigeria and beyond, proving that with dedication, hard work, and the right support, they too can compete—and win—on the global stage.
