Malnutrition has significantly increased as a result of Nigeria’s protracted economic crisis, impacting over 5.4 million children under five in the country’s North-East and North-West regions, according to a warning from UNICEF.
The organisation emphasises the urgent need for more than $250 million in support, of which more than $100 million is needed for Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina states.
The provision of critical services in the areas of child protection, education, water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), nutrition, and health depends on these funds.
Cristian Munduate, UNICEF’s Country Representative, clarified the gravity of the issue, pointing out that the worsening economic conditions are putting millions of children in danger.
The organisation is pleading for quick assistance to address this situation and stop the health and well-being of children in the impacted areas from further declining.
