For Nigerian athletes and sports, the Olympics are extremely important, and the games in Paris this year are no exception. At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Nojeem Maiyegun won the nation’s first significant Olympic medal in the men’s light middleweight boxing division, taking home a bronze.
Nigeria’s greatest notable football accomplishment came in 1996 when the Dream Team shocked the football world by defeating Argentina and Brazil on route to the gold medal in Atlanta. But Chioma Ajunwa became the first and only Nigerian athlete to earn an Olympic gold medal when she won the gold in the women’s long jump in Atlanta.
Nigeria will compete in 11 sports at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, including football, basketball, long jump, and weightlifting, starting on July 26. There will be 82 Nigerian athletes competing in all.
