The Wooden Fence That Took 3 Years to Build

True Life Story of a Single mother

by Tolulope Akinruli

Being a mother to young children, safeguarding their well-being became my utmost priority, prompting the need for a secure fence around our property. This necessity was driven by the concern of preventing my kids from inadvertently venturing into the street or encountering potential dangers like wild animals or stray dogs, as captioned by entreprenuerng.com

Upon relocating to my first house after a divorce, I discovered a critical oversight – the absence of fencing around the property. As part of our separation agreement, my ex-husband had committed to installing chain-link fencing if deemed necessary for the safety of the children.

The realization of the missing fencing came to light as I meticulously compared the survey of the property with the actual yard. To complicate matters, the yard featured a two-foot drop due to a newly installed water line, translating to a loss of approximately 15 feet of usable space across the entire 50-foot width of the yard.

Utilizing some large rocks left over from excavation, a resourceful solution emerged as a makeshift wall. Subsequently, I arranged for fill dirt to be delivered, allowing it to settle for several weeks before informing my ex-husband that I was ready for the fencing.

However, when he arrived with the materials, it became apparent that his measurements were taken before the yard was filled, leading to a shortfall in materials. Financial constraints prevented him from covering the difference, leaving me in a predicament.

Despite these challenges, a partial fence was erected, remaining incomplete for the first few years. It wasn’t until I could afford the additional materials that I completed the fencing myself. The labor-intensive process of digging holes, dragging posts with pre-attached concrete, and installing chain link was physically demanding, leaving a lasting impression that I vowed never to work with those materials again.

The journey continued as I sold that house and moved to another summer bungalow on the opposite side of the lake, yet again finding myself without fencing. Although the children were older, the desire for privacy persisted, reigniting my determination to secure the property.

This time around, I embarked on a quest to explore alternative materials that would not only provide the desired privacy but also alleviate the challenges I had previously encountered. The need for a fence became more than a mere safety measure; it evolved into a project of finding resilient and efficient solutions, reflecting the evolving dynamics of my journey as a homeowner and a mother.
