The Great Britain: African Racism Amid Civilization

by Tolulope Akinruli

A black girl who attends Thomas Knyvett School in Ashford, Surrey, United Kingdom, was brutally attacked a few days ago, on February 6, exact. This shocking incident shocked the entire world. The teenage girl was injured in a fight that turned into a free-for-all when a “mother” and her kids unleashed violence on the defenseless black girl, repeatedly punching and kicking her in the head.

The incident took place at the intersection of Salcombe Road and Stanwell Road in Ashford, and no bystanders intervened to stop the racist gang’s violence against the teen.

This incident is abhorrent, repugnant, and overtly racist. The attack on the hospitalized teen, whose parents are seeking an explanation, has been denounced by members of parliament, including the MP for Ashford, and that is inappropriate and condemnable.

However, the Ashford incident has once again shown us that racism is alive and well, particularly among Anglo-Saxons. The world is beset by many issues, including wars, climate change, natural disasters, economic crises, and diseases. The problem is far from resolved. It conceals power relations and social interactions everywhere.

Racism persists despite official efforts to decry it through various criminalization measures. Due to the structural and physical violence that they foster, the topic of race and race relations has remained a hot topic in the media.

Apartheid South Africa was notorious for its racist activities. While apartheid was transformed into a rainbow society as a result of the liberation struggles, the United States has continued to be in the spotlight for its racist atrocities, which continue to draw attention on a global scale and are occasionally the focus of electoral campaigns aimed at gaining the support of minorities like the black communities.

Although it could be argued that racism still exists in Britain despite equal opportunity laws, to our knowledge, no significant acts of racist violence have occurred recently to warrant such widespread attention for insulting sentient humanity.

The pedestal of prehistory is still a barrier for those trapped in the racist cocoon. This is essentially what the Ashford “mother” and her kids demonstrated by brutally beating a black adolescent.

It is regrettable that, despite the growing reality of multiculturalism, some segments of the white population in Britain can deteriorate to levels of heinous racism. The incident has the potential to spark a massive racist uprising and civil war in that nation, which would be disastrous for racial relations in a society that is already on the cusp of becoming increasingly multicultural.

Conclusion

The security apparatuses and state actors in Britain need to take notice and take steps to prevent another incident of this nature. This can be done in part by punishing offenders as necessary. It is unacceptable and shameful. In the global village that is the world of the twenty-first century, this is most definitely not where we should be going. No not at all!!!
