Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently partaking in the vibrant festivities of the 37th Annual Akesan Day celebration for the year 2023, held in the picturesque Iperu community situated within the Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun. This noteworthy event has been orchestrated by the Iperu Development Association (IDA), adding a sense of community pride and engagement.

Upon his arrival, the Vice President was warmly welcomed by the esteemed Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, along with the distinguished presence of governors from Kwara and Kogi states. The gathering further featured the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, alongside a gathering of other high-ranking officials from both the Federal and State governments. The assemblage of such prominent figures underscores the significance and prestige of the Akesan day celebration.

Akesan, the mythical founder of Iperu, holds a special place in the history and heritage of this ancient town in Ogun, situated in the southwestern region of Nigeria. According to oral traditions passed down through generations, Akesan was the daughter of an Alaafin. She, along with her husband Ajagbe, embarked on a migration from the ancient city of Ile Ife, eventually settling in Iperu during the 13th or 14th century. This historical narrative adds a layer of cultural richness to the celebration, connecting the present-day festivities to the deep roots of the town’s past.

The Annual Akesan Day celebration serves not only as a commemoration of the town’s founding figure but also as a unifying force, bringing together leaders and representatives from various levels of government. It fosters a sense of community spirit and pride, showcasing the vibrant cultural tapestry that defines the region.
