The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) plans to update Nigerian universities’ curriculum to cover Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, and advanced cryptocurrency, aligning with evolving industry demands.
SEC Director General, Dr. Emomotimi Agama, announced this during the inauguration of a curriculum review committee led by renowned Capital Market Studies expert Professor Uche Uwaleke from Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
The review focuses on updating the curriculum initially approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for Securities and Investment Management.
Agama explained that the initiative reflects the SEC’s commitment to equipping future capital market professionals with essential, modern skills. “With advancements in fintech, cybersecurity, AI, and more, updating the curriculum is critical,” he said. “Our goal is to prepare young Nigerians with the capital market expertise they need. This new committee will enhance the curriculum to reflect these advancements.”
Agama further noted the importance of broader public understanding of capital market issues, expressing a strong desire to position Nigeria’s capital market among the best globally. He praised the committee’s academic leadership for contributing to the initiative and stressed the need for robust discourse.
The committee’s objectives include reviewing the NUC’s curriculum on Securities and Investment Management to encompass Non-Interest Capital Markets (NICM), the commodities ecosystem, financial derivatives, sustainable finance, and capital market regulations. Additionally, they aim to expand the “Introduction to Cryptocurrency” course to cover recent developments and standardize a Capital Market Studies curriculum for universities and tertiary institutions.
Professor Uwaleke expressed gratitude on behalf of the committee, acknowledging the SEC’s trust in their expertise. He emphasized the team’s commitment, viewing this curriculum upgrade as a significant national responsibility.
