The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has notified Nigerians about an epidemic of anthrax, a zoonotic disease, in Zamfara. Mr Ben Goong, Director of the Ministry’s Information and Public Relations Department, made the announcement on Tuesday in Abuja. He claimed that the outbreak happened on a farm in Zamfara.

Anthrax is an infection produced by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis that can infect warm-blooded animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and wildlife, as well as people, with serious consequences. The disease could be transmitted through contact with the bacterium’s spores, which are frequently found in pathogenic animal products or byproducts.

Symptoms include fever, coughing, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, a sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes, headaches, itching, and bleeding from major openings.

Goong urged stakeholders and states surrounding Zamfara to take prompt action to avoid the disease’s spread. He asked stakeholders to increase alert and take proactive efforts to reduce the hazards connected with the disease.

“We urge the public to be vigilant, report any unusual illnesses in animals or humans, and follow all preventive guidelines issued by the appropriate authorities.” “While anthrax can be prevented via concerted measures such as risk assessment, surveys, and ring vaccination of susceptible animals in high-risk areas, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for limiting its spread. “The ministry remains committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure a swift and effective response,” added Mr. Singh.
