In a resounding commitment to the economic empowerment of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unequivocally pledged ongoing support for the promotion of a diverse array of products and services originating from these enterprises within the state. His visionary approach extends to encouraging both local and international investors to engage in collaborative efforts with MSMEs, fostering partnerships that can elevate their products and services to the global market.

This proclamation was articulated during the closing ceremony of the 8th Lagos MSMEs Exclusive Trade Fair, a pivotal event held at the Y-Arena on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi. Governor Sanwo-Olu, though not physically present, was represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Folashade Ambrose-Medebem. The governor underscored the significant role of the trade fair as a cost-free marketing platform, providing entrepreneurs in the state with a unique opportunity to showcase their offerings.

In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the indispensable nature of collaboration, asserting that it is through such partnerships that small businesses in Lagos can realize a reasonable return on investment and ultimately break into the competitive global market. The governor acknowledged the pivotal role of MSMEs in fostering economic vitality, acting as catalysts for job creation, wealth generation, income enhancement, and the facilitation of investment opportunities.

The theme of the 8th edition, “Empowering MSMEs for AfCFTA Excellence through Sustainable Economic Growth,” resonates with the governor’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Development Agenda. This forward-looking theme underscores the commitment to positioning women and youths to harness the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the broader global market.

Governor Sanwo-Olu underscored the positive impact of the trade fair on local economic activities within the Lagos Division. Over the course of the event, which spanned five days, various sectors experienced an upswing in employment opportunities, as entrepreneurs, vendors, artisans, and service providers engaged in marquee, booth setup, carpentry, electrical services, food vending, chair and table rentals, cleaning services, and more.

Expressing a continued dedication to the cause, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced plans to develop a comprehensive compendium of Lagos MSMEs in a sectoral format, establishing a robust database. This initiative aims to enhance strategic planning and further the state’s efforts to attract investment, both domestic and foreign, through MSMEs. The governor also affirmed the state’s commitment to sustaining the convocation of such trade fairs, foreseeing a continued activation of economic activities at the local level.
