Today, as announced by His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’d Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), marks the commencement of preparations for the blessed month of Ramadan. This initiation is signaled by the search for the crescent moon, a tradition ingrained in the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W), eagerly anticipated by Muslims worldwide.
As we embark on this spiritual journey of fasting, devotion, and reflection spanning 29 or 30 days, it is imperative that we have already intensified our preparations for this sacred exercise. Allah enjoins believers to observe fasting as a means to attain piety, echoing the practice ordained for previous generations.
The essence of fasting lies in cultivating taqwa, or God-consciousness, and nurturing a closer relationship with Allah through the noble act of abstaining from food, drink, and marital relations from dawn till dusk throughout the entire month. Beyond fasting, Muslims are called upon to engage in acts of charity, selflessness, and refrain from indulging in negative behaviors such as gossip, falsehood, backbiting, slander, corruption, and mischief.
Ramadan
Ramadan is heralded as the month of mercy, forgiveness, and intense worship, urging Muslims to embrace spiritual actions over complacency. It serves as a time for sincere repentance, moral upliftment, and fostering virtues of charity, love, and harmonious coexistence within society. Let us welcome Ramadan with open hearts and minds, embracing its transformative potential to lead us towards a renewed sense of spirituality and righteousness.
