Dangote, at the 29th Nigerian Economic Summit held in Abuja on the 23rd of October, 2023, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, took the opportunity to express his appreciation and admiration for the Dangote Group. During his visit to the Dangote stand at the event, President Tinubu commended the company for its exceptional contributions to Nigeria and the broader African continent.

The President’s acknowledgment of the Dangote Group’s efforts came as the latest in a series of accolades and awards the company had received. These recognitions were primarily for the remarkable work the company had done in creating thousands of job opportunities and positively impacting lives in the region.

While at the Dangote stand at the Nigerian Economic Summit, President Tinubu took a moment to convey his thoughts: “You are doing well. Keep doing the good things you are doing. Keep investing in Nigeria.” This endorsement from the President was a testament to the importance of the Dangote Group’s work in the country and its role in advancing economic development and growth.

The Dangote Group’s significance in the Nigerian economic landscape cannot be overstated. It is widely regarded as one of the largest employers in the country, second only to the government itself. Additionally, the company has earned a reputation as one of the continent’s most prominent philanthropic organizations, further cementing its status as a key driver of social progress and economic development.

In his address at the summit’s opening ceremony, President Tinubu emphasized the vital role of the private sector in the development of the Nigerian economy. He underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and private enterprises, stating that the nation’s development could only be realized through concerted and cooperative efforts.

Experts who participated in the summit discussions also highlighted the anticipation surrounding the Dangote Refinery, with an optimistic outlook on its potential to bring about a substantial economic boost to Nigeria. This expectation was rooted in the belief that the refinery could significantly contribute to the nation’s economic development and energy security.

A panel discussion held during the event, titled ‘Unlocking our Competitive Advantage,’ featured insights from the Group Managing Director of Dangote Industries Limited, Mr. Olakunle Alake. Mr. Alake emphasized the exciting prospect that the government, under President Tinubu’s leadership, recognizes the critical role of the private sector and the necessity of collaborative efforts for sustainable development.

Furthermore, Mr. Alake stressed that for Nigeria to play a pivotal role in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA), the country must prioritize the growth of its manufacturing sector. He pointed out the obstacles hindering the smooth implementation of AFCFTA, including a weak productive sector, a shortage of essential skills, and inadequate infrastructure. Although he acknowledged that AFCFTA alone could not solve Nigeria’s economic challenges, he asserted that the country could derive significant benefits from it by supporting and enhancing its manufacturing sector.

Mr. Alake concluded by urging governments in West African countries to address the issues that hinder the successful implementation of ECOWAS protocols. He expressed regret that doing business across West African countries remained a challenging endeavor due to existing barriers and obstacles.

Conclusion: Dangote

The 29th Nigerian Economic Summit served as a platform for acknowledging and celebrating the achievements and contributions of the Dangote Group to Nigeria and the African continent. It also emphasized the importance of collaboration between the private sector and the government for the nation’s economic development and the need to address key impediments to regional economic integration.
