The Nigerian Presidency has acknowledged Ajuri Ngelale’s decision to take an indefinite leave of absence due to personal and health issues. Ngelale, who has served as President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity and the President’s Official Spokesperson, made this announcement on September 7, 2024.

Ngelale’s Statement

In his statement, Ngelale explained that his decision was driven by pressing medical concerns affecting his immediate family. He described the choice to step away from his duties as “agonizing” but necessary to address these urgent health issues.

“I needed to address medical matters affecting my immediate family,” he said. “This decision, involving a pause in my duties, was made after significant consultations with my family over the past several days.”

Presidency’s Reaction

The Presidency expressed understanding and sympathy for Ngelale’s situation. In a statement released on September 7, 2024, President Tinubu noted that he fully supports Ngelale’s decision and extends his best wishes for a speedy recovery.

“The President acknowledges his tireless efforts and dedication in serving the nation and thanks him for his remarkable contributions, particularly in advancing national discourse and leading efforts on climate action and other key initiatives,” the statement read. “During this period, we kindly ask that the privacy of Chief Ngelale and his family be respected.”

Background on Ajuri Ngelale

Before his role as Special Adviser to President Tinubu, Ngelale served as Senior Special Adviser on Public Affairs to former President Muhammadu Buhari. He was the Tinubu Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson during the 2023 elections.

Ngelale also played a significant role in the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, tasked with advancing Nigeria’s climate and green economic initiatives. Through his press engagements and media work, he was instrumental in presenting President Tinubu positively to both Nigerians and the international community.

In the past, Ngelale worked as a senior reporter and presenter at Africa Independent Television and Channels Television, where he built a reputation for his work in journalism before transitioning into his political roles.
