Pascal Gabriel Dozie, the visionary entrepreneur who established the now-defunct Diamond Bank Plc and served as the former Chairman of MTN Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 85.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement on Tuesday, revealing that he died on Monday, April 7, 2025, just a day before his 86th birthday.
Born on April 9, 1939, Dozie was raised in a devout Catholic household, with his father, Charles Dozie, serving as a catechist.
He received his early education at Our Lady’s School, Emekuku, before attending Holy Ghost Juniorate Seminary and Holy Ghost College, Owerri, where he earned his West African Senior School Certificate.
With a strong passion for education, he pursued higher studies in the United Kingdom, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the London School of Economics.
He later earned a Master’s degree in Administrative Science from City University in London, specializing in Operational Research and Industrial Engineering.
Dozie made a lasting impact on Nigeria’s financial sector, founding Diamond Bank in 1990. Under his leadership, the bank grew into a major financial institution before merging with Access Bank in a landmark consolidation.
His influence extended beyond banking, as he played a crucial role in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, serving as Chairman of MTN Nigeria and guiding the company through its expansion.
Renowned for his business acumen, integrity, and contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth, Dozie was widely celebrated as a pioneer in both banking and telecommunications.
His dedication to excellence earned him several accolades, including the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).
Pascal Dozie’s legacy as a trailblazer, mentor, and visionary leader remains firmly entrenched in Nigeria’s corporate landscape. He is survived by his wife, Chinyere, and their five children.
