After escorting a group of police officers to an accident scene on WEMCO Road at AY intersection in Ogba, Lagos State, Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Isokphehi was slain by okada riders. It was learnt that the collision happened early yesterday morning.
After a motorbike rider was killed in a collision involving a truck, the police team had to clear the area of debris and block the truck to stop the driver from fleeing. Isokpehi was hurt in the head before he allegedly passed away on the spot after thugs on motorcycles broke into the area and attacked the police squad.
The motorcycle riders ran during the altercation, and the truck driver left with the vehicle. Five individuals have been taken into custody, according to SP Benjamin Hudenyin, a spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, who verified the occurrence. The police officer and motorcycle rider’s bodies, he said, had been taken to the Mainland General Hospital mortuary in Yaba for autopsy. He also said that there was a manhunt going on for additional fugitive individuals and that any new information would be shared.
“The police team received a distress call at approximately 1.40 am on Saturday of a tragic accident that included Okada rider and a trailer at WEMCO intersection Mobil Road by PenCinema Agege, which the police swiftly came to for intervention,” Hundeyin added, characterising the incident as “needless and uncalled for.”
When the team arrived on the scene, they saw that many motorbike riders had congregated nearby. However, as the patrol team was leaving the truck, the riders attacked them and insisted on setting the truck on fire.
As a result, one ASP, 46, was killed instantly after suffering a head injury, and the truck driver managed to flee. Since then, five people have been taken into custody, and more are still being sought.
