NURTW: Difficulties Amid Election Day

by Tolulope Akinruli

The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Olaniyi Ijalaye said on Saturday that the commission still faced logistical difficulties despite working with the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Ogun State to expedite the distribution of electoral materials to various polling units in the state.

A woman named Ijalaye made the statement while visiting Abiodun’s polling place to conduct an on-site evaluation of the ongoing voting process there and at other polling places throughout the Ikenne LGA. She assured the electorates that no one would be denied the right to vote while commenting on the delay in the start of voting and the lack of election materials in various communities in the state.

She also noted that the logistical issues the commission had with the NURTW had been overcome.

“With all due respect, there were a few other voting places that experienced one or two difficulties in addition to the governor’s polling unit,” he stated.

However, the fact that so many people turned out to vote for their preferred candidates as part of their civic duty made her very happy.

Although, she further said that they are working together with the NURTW, and a few logistical problems have been ironed out and with full assurance to the good people of Ogun State that nobody will be denied their rights. Even if voting starts right away, it won’t end until everyone has cast their ballot.

It was observed that the voting process at Abiodun’s polling place in Ward 002, Polling Unit 003, Ita Osanyin, Iperu, had started late.

James Alabama, a voter, saw the incident and urged the INEC to provide voting materials promptly for the presidential election.

He remarked, “Although there is no fighting because everyone knows who they are voting for, the voting procedure is incredibly slow and started quite late.

Voting had already began at roughly 9:30 a.m., although in a polling location very close to the governor’s, people began casting ballots one hour and thirty minutes before voting started at the governor’s location.

We won’t take any action if anything similar occurs during the governor’s race and has an impact on the voting process.

Also, the INEC officials have not yet been spotted at Magboro, Asese, Oke-Afa, or Mowe in the state’s Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area either.

In conclusion, While several voters were heard criticizing the situation, others who were unable to handle it left their polling locations and went home.
