‘No gree for anybody’: Police warn against use of slogan

by Tolulope Akinruli

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a stern warning regarding the prevalent usage of the catchphrase ‘no gree for anybody,’ particularly among the youth demographic, expressing apprehension about its potential to escalate into a crisis. This catchphrase, which has gained widespread popularity in Nigerian social media circles and on the streets, conveys a sentiment of refusing to tolerate any form of nonsense or bullying from others.

During a press briefing held in Abuja, Muyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police, underscored the significance of this cautionary message. Despite the catchphrase being interpreted by many as a simple assertion of personal boundaries, Adejobi revealed that intelligence reports have raised red flags about its capacity to plunge Nigeria into a crisis of considerable proportions. While the phrase may be perceived as a colloquial and seemingly innocuous expression of individual resilience, Adejobi emphasized that within the security community, it is regarded as a potentially perilous slogan capable of triggering widespread crises.

“The new slogan for 2024 for young people is ‘no dey gree for anybody’,” Adejobi stated during the briefing. He further explained that their intelligence suggests the origin of this slogan is linked to a retributionary sector that could potentially contribute to issues across the country.

In a related development disclosed during the same briefing, Adejobi provided information about a recent breakthrough in law enforcement efforts. Three individuals, identified as Ahmed Sulaimon, Balikisu Aliyu, and Aboki Samuel, were apprehended in connection with the Christmas Eve attacks on several communities in Plateau state. These attacks resulted in a tragic loss of over 150 lives.

This dual focus on cautioning against the ‘no gree for anybody’ slogan and providing updates on law enforcement actions highlights the multifaceted challenges faced by the Nigeria Police Force in maintaining public order and addressing security concerns in the nation. Adejobi’s statements serve as a reminder of the delicate balance that law enforcement authorities must strike between respecting freedom of expression and proactively addressing potential threats to societal peace and stability, as reported by gaurdian.ng
