NIN, numerous Nigerians have been vocal about the unfair practices and excessive demands from certain unscrupulous agents of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) during the National Identity Number (NIN) registration process. However, relief may be on the horizon as the commission announces plans to introduce a revamped self-service portal, aimed at granting individuals the ability to register conveniently online.
The Director-General of the Commission, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, revealed this development in Lagos, expressing the commission’s exhaustion with the continuous influx of complaints. She stated that the new self-help platform will empower Nigerians to complete their registrations from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need to visit NIMC offices or engage with intermediaries.
Coker-Odusote noted that despite challenges, the commission has successfully registered 104 million Nigerians. She pledged to double this number promptly once the portal becomes operational, emphasizing the goal of simplifying the registration process and eradicating extortion and long queues.
