The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has identified five websites allegedly involved in the fraudulent harvesting of Nigerians’ data.
This revelation follows concerns that the Paradigm Initiative raises regarding websites selling Nigerians’ sensitive information, such as national identification numbers (NIN), bank verification numbers (BVN), and international passport details.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, the commission listed the websites engaged in illegal data harvesting:
- idfinder.com.ng
- Verify.Ng/sign in
- championtech.com.ng
- trustyonline.com
- anyverify.com
The statement warns the public against engaging with these websites or providing their data, as they operate without authorization and are potentially fraudulent. NIMC emphasized that data submitted on these platforms may be used illegally to provide unauthorized data services.
Assurance of Data Security
Contrary to Paradigm Initiative’s claims, NIMC assured the public that Nigerians’ sensitive data had not been compromised. The commission asserted that it has further implemented measures to secure the NIN database.
The statement reiterated that NIMC has not authorized any entity to sell or misuse NIN or any other identity data mentioned in the report. It highlighted the commission’s adherence to the ISO 27001:2013 Information Security Management System Standard and strict compliance with Nigerian Data Protection Law.
Advisory Against Unauthorized Sites
NIMC advised Nigerians to exercise caution and avoid sharing their data on unauthorized or phishing websites. The commission warned that such actions could lead to data harvesting and compromise individuals’ personal information.
Authorized Partners and Security Measures
Regarding its operational standards, NIMC clarified that its licensed partners or vendors are strictly authorized to verify NINs through approved channels, not to store or scan NIN slips.
The commission affirmed its commitment to collaborating with law enforcement agencies to apprehend individuals posing as online vendors, who will face legal consequences.
Vigilance and Reliable Sources
In conclusion, NIMC urged the public to remain vigilant against misinformation and rely on verified sources for accurate updates. It underscored its commitment to ensuring secure and reliable identity management and safeguarding critical national databases and systems.
Background
Paradigm Initiative, a Pan-African social enterprise, had previously expressed concern over unauthorized websites claiming access to Nigerians’ sensitive personal and financial data for minimal fees. This development was described as a serious breach of privacy rights and a potential threat to national security and the economy.
