Ogunyemi Oluwajoba Adebisi, triumphing as the winner of the Nigerian Maritime Ambassadors (NIMA) season two, is poised to embark on a year-long campaign dedicated to championing environmental sustainability, fostering youth involvement in the blue economy, and forging collaborations with key maritime agencies to execute cleaner ocean projects. The announcement was made by Sylvanus Obasi, the Director of the NIMA Reality TV Show and Chief Executive of Platforms Communications, during the prize presentation ceremony held at the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Lagos area office.

In his proclamation, Obasi unveiled the pivotal role that Adebisi would play in the maritime sector throughout his one-year reign. This period would see Adebisi executing three designated projects as the Nigerian Maritime Ambassador for 2023/2024. Obasi emphasized the crucial nature of the NIMA winner’s office in the overall vision and mission of the show. To achieve the set objectives and sustain NIMA’s growth aligned with its aims, the winner is tasked with undertaking specific pet projects as part of the statutory functions and responsibilities inherent in the role.

Adebisi’s first project involves promoting youth involvement in the blue economy. This includes visiting tertiary institutions, hosting and attending youth enlightenment seminars or fora, all geared towards creating awareness and encouraging the nation’s youth to actively participate in the blue economy. Recognizing the importance of engaging the younger generation in maritime activities, this initiative aims to instill a sense of responsibility and awareness among the youth.

The second project revolves around collaboration with relevant maritime government agencies and organizations, including the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), and NIWA. Together, they will execute a pet project called the Cleaner Ocean Campaign (COC). The COC project places a strong emphasis on the regular cleaning of jetties, beaches, and other marine environments. Simultaneously, it seeks to create awareness in riverine communities about the dangers of marine pollution and litter. By fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, this initiative addresses the critical issue of maintaining the ecological balance of marine ecosystems.

The third project, the green port concept, is aimed at promoting an eco-friendly environment within ports. This involves campaigning for the reduction of noise, emissions, and the use of fossil fuels in ports and terminals. Additionally, it includes creating awareness to encourage the planting of flower trees within ports and terminals, fostering a sustainable and eco-friendly maritime work environment. By integrating environmentally conscious practices, this initiative aligns with global efforts to mitigate the impact of human activities on the planet.

Adebisi, who goes by the show name Demigod, not only secured the prestigious title of Nigerian Maritime Ambassador for 2023/2024 but also earned substantial rewards. His winnings include N10 million worth of deals, a car, a cash prize, media tours, and promotion, along with a one-year endorsement deal. This comprehensive package reflects the recognition of his potential to drive positive change within the maritime sector.

Former Director General of NIMASA, Temisan Omatseye, acknowledged the vast potential of Nigeria’s maritime sector, emphasizing the pivotal role of youth participation and contributions to fully harness and maximize the sector’s opportunities. Omatseye’s perspective underscores the importance of nurturing talent and involving the younger generation in shaping the future of the maritime industry.

Mrs. Sarat Braimoh, the Area Manager of the Lagos Area Office of NIWA, extended congratulations to Adebisi. She expressed her hopes that his reign as the Nigerian Maritime Ambassador would be guided and granted success by divine intervention, pledging NIWA’s continuous support.

Conclusion: NIMA

Ogunyemi Oluwajoba Adebisi’s upcoming year as the Nigerian Maritime Ambassador promises to be a period of significant impact on the industry. With a focus on environmental sustainability, youth involvement, and collaborative efforts with key maritime agencies, Adebisi is poised to contribute to the advancement of the maritime sector in Nigeria.
