The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election which took place on February 25 has been met with conflicting emotions.
The closely contested position was declared won by the former governor of Lagos State by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.
With 8,794,726, Tinubu defeated the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Atiku Abubakar by over two million votes.
Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) finished second to Tinubu in the presidential race, according to the results that State Collation Officers gave to INEC, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) finished third.
Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP), finished considerably behind the top three competitors for the country’s top political position.
Reactions
APC members and supporters in particular were quick to celebrate Bola Tinubu on his triumph while many Nigerians took to social media to condemn the proclamation.
Nigerians who protested the results did so in response to INEC’s alleged corruption and irregularities.
The INEC Chairman was charged with purposefully influencing the election results in favor of the APC candidate.
During the collation of the results at the National Collation Centre, Abuja, these accusations became even more obvious.
Political party representatives expressed worries since INEC was unable to project data straight from BVAS.
