In the first half of 2024, African nations received $4.08 billion from The Global Fund, significantly boosting their healthcare systems.
This funding, earmarked for 2024-2026, targets major diseases and aims to strengthen healthcare infrastructures, enhancing overall delivery. The goal is to improve health outcomes, achieve universal health coverage, and meet the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
The funds will implement long-term strategies to tackle public health challenges, reduce disease burdens, and develop sustainable health systems across Africa. These investments will also boost regional capacity to handle future health crises.
African Recipients of the Funding
Côte D’Ivoire received €230 million ($253 million), Sierra Leone got $136 million, and Mali obtained €102 million ($112.2 million). These funds will enhance healthcare delivery and combat endemic diseases.
Kenya received $407 million, and Zambia secured $362 million. These amounts aim to sustain progress against major diseases and strengthen community and health systems.
Ethiopia received $441 million to combat HIV, TB, and malaria while reinforcing health systems. Tanzania was granted over $602.8 million to continue its fight against AIDS, TB, and malaria and to bolster community and health systems.
Mozambique, the second-largest recipient, received $771 million to support efforts against HIV, TB, and malaria and invest in resilient health systems. Nigeria leads the list, securing $993 million to combat AIDS, TB, and malaria and strengthen healthcare infrastructures and pandemic preparedness.
