Nestlé Nigeria has recently underscored its unwavering commitment to environmental preservation through an extensive and impactful nationwide clean-up campaign. The company, a prominent player in the food and beverage industry, mobilized an impressive force of over 400 employees to partake in this initiative. The primary focus of this endeavor was not only to ensure the cleanliness of urban centers but also to actively contribute to the safeguarding, rejuvenation, and restoration of the nation’s ecosystem.
This ambitious clean-up initiative was no small feat, spanning across twelve key markets strategically located in urban centers such as Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, Sagamu, Ibadan, Jos, Abuja, Awka, Ota, Agbara, Enugu, and Abaji. Notably, this large-scale effort was powered by one of Nestlé’s leading brands, MAGGI, emphasizing the company’s commitment to leveraging its brand influence for positive environmental impact.
Victoria Uwadoka, the Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager at Nestlé Nigeria, played a crucial role in shedding light on the significance of the company’s proactive stance in tackling environmental challenges. She emphasized Nestlé’s dedication to combating the escalating waste crisis, which is exacerbated by indiscriminate waste disposal practices and limited recovery services. Uwadoka stressed the necessity of creating awareness through advocacy, marking a crucial step towards a sustainable and waste-free future.
Participating in the yearly World Clean-Up Day, observed globally in September, Nestlé Nigeria engaged its workforce through the Nestlé Cares initiative. This global employee volunteering program aims to channel the collective efforts of Nestlé employees towards meaningful and impactful community projects. With over 400 employees actively participating, Nestlé Nigeria demonstrated its commitment to making a tangible difference in environmental sustainability.
“At Nestlé, we are taking concrete actions to protect, renew, and restore the environment every day,” stated Uwadoka. She highlighted the company’s awareness of the detrimental effects of indiscriminate waste disposal and limited recovery services on the waste crisis. Nestlé’s approach involves motivating behavioral changes and establishing an efficient recovery system in collaboration with industry and community stakeholders.
Furthermore, the company is actively accelerating sustainability education through various channels, including employees, the media, communities, and children in Nestlé for Healthier Kids beneficiary schools. The clean-up campaigns in various markets serve as a testament to Nestlé’s sustained efforts over the past five years to improve the environment and promote responsible waste management.
Dr. Alexander Akhigbe, Founder/CEO of the African Clean-Up Initiative, expressed gratitude for the collaboration with Nestlé Nigeria. The commendable efforts of Nestlé Nigeria were also acknowledged by Comrade Aremu Komolafe, a member of the Ojuwoye market committee in Mushin, Lagos State. He praised the active participation of Nestlé’s volunteers in cleaning up the bustling market in South-West Nigeria. Komolafe acknowledged the substantial waste generated daily in the market, emphasizing that Nestlé’s clean-up initiative aligns seamlessly with the Lagos State government’s designated market clean-up efforts every Thursday.
