NBS Reports 5kg Cooking Gas Priced at N7,418 in May

The National Bureau of Statistics, the average cost of five kilogrammes of cooking gas rose from N6,521.58 in April 2024 to N7,418.45 in May 2024.

The nation’s capital, Abuja, hosted the announcement of the Bureau’s “Cooking Gas Price Watch” for May 2024 on Wednesday.

According to the report, the price in May constituted a 13.75 per cent rise over the price that was acquired in April 2024.

According to the NBS, the average cost of 5 kg of cooking gas rose by 70.12% annually from N4,360.69 in May 2023 to N7,418.45 in May 2024.

Benue reported the highest average price at N8,012.03, followed by Enugu at NN7,926.21 and Ondo at N7,857.53, according to the state profile analysis study.

However, Yobe recorded the lowest price of N5,842.31, according to NBS, followed by Jigawa and Katsina at N6,521.81 and N6,842.31, respectively.

“The North-East recorded the lowest average retail price at N7,071.84,” the NBS said.

According to zone-by-zone analysis, the South East had the highest average retail price of N7,680.87 for 5 kg of cooking gas, followed by the South-West with N6,593.93.

Additionally, according to the NBS, the average retail cost to refill a 12.5 kg cooking gas container dropped from N15,637.74 in April 2024 to N15,627.40 in May 2024, a 0.07 percent monthly decrease.

According to the research, the average retail price of 12.5 kg of cooking gas increased annually by 63.85%, from N9,537.89 in May 2023 to N15,627.40 in May 2024.

However, the data also revealed that Taraba and Ebonyi had the highest average prices, at N13,860.3 and N13,788.09, respectively, while Bauchi had the lowest average price, at N13,076.43.

Zone-by-zone analysis revealed that the South-South had the highest average retail price of N16,310.02 for 12.5 kg of cooking gas, followed by the North-West with N15,991.13.

According to the data, the North-East had the lowest price, N15,010.62.
