Namibian Energy, Maggy Shino, who holds the esteemed position of Petroleum Commissioner within Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, delivered a comprehensive and insightful update on the state of the nation’s oil and gas sector during a workshop session at the African Energy Week (AEW) in 2023. This prominent event was organized by the African Energy Chamber, a respected institution within the energy industry.

Shino’s presentation began by shedding light on the considerable opportunities that are emerging in Namibia, with a particular focus on the eagerly anticipated arrival of Total’s Deepsea Mira rig. She elaborated, “Total’s Deepsea Mira rig embarked on its journey from Bergen, Norway, in the early days of April 2023, and it is scheduled to make landfall in Namibia on November 15th. This impressive rig represents an enhanced and extended CS 60 E harsh environment design semi-submersible, a remarkable engineering feat delivered by Hyundai Heavy in South Korea.”, Namibian Energy.

The excitement surrounding the Deepsea Mira rig’s arrival is palpable, and Shino went on to explain that meticulous preparations and logistical arrangements are well underway for drilling new wells. “We have ambitious plans for 2024,” she noted, “with expectations to drill a total of five wells offshore in the Orange Basin.” These endeavors are aimed at further enhancing the exploration of the region’s energy resources, and as part of this, Shino revealed that there are plans to acquire a 3D volume for onshore prospecting, Namibian Energy.

In a global context marked by an ongoing energy transition towards more sustainable and eco-friendly practices, Shino emphasized Namibia’s unwavering commitment to the exploration of oil and gas resources. Simultaneously, they are keenly focused on developing renewable energy sources. A key element of this commitment is a dedication to environmentally friendly practices in all energy-related projects. Shino was unequivocal in stating, “We have a basket full of resources, and our steadfast commitment is to ensure the protection of our environment while unlocking the potential of these resources.”

Moreover, Shino provided an overview of Namibia’s development scenarios, which are primarily aimed at maximizing the utilization of natural gas. These visionary plans encompass the implementation of gas-to-power projects, the establishment of a burgeoning petrochemical industry, and the production of blue hydrogen and fertilizer, all of which are intended to not only bolster the agricultural sector but also contribute significantly to the Southern African Power Pool by generating additional megawatts, Namibian Energy.

Crucially, Namibia is actively seeking investment to unlock the immense potential within its oil and gas sector. In this regard, Shino expressed an open and welcoming stance towards various types of investors. They encourage and invite those with substantial financial resources as well as those who possess specialized technologies that can address the unique challenges of the region. In Shino’s own words, “We are open for business,” underlining the nation’s eagerness to foster partnerships and collaborations.
