The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, or NSIB, has initiated an investigation into the incident involving a Boeing 737-400 aircraft registered 5N-MBD and operated by Max Air. The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, around 10:48 p.m., at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano, MAKIA.

Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, stated in a statement: “The aircraft, flying from Lagos to Kano with 53 passengers and six crew members on board, landed on runway 06.” During deceleration, at under 60 knots and with thrust reversers on, the aircraft experienced a tremendous bang and veered quickly left.

“The flight crew quickly regained control of the aeroplane and safely brought it to a stop. All 53 passengers and staff members disembarked safely, with no injuries recorded.

“The NSIB has sent a GoTeam to the scene of the event. The team’s inquiry will centre on determining the root cause, which could include any technical, operational, or procedural errors.

“The NSIB remains committed to enforcing the highest aviation safety standards and making recommendations to avoid similar incidents. Additional developments will be released as the inquiry progresses.
