Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State issued a comprehensive Health Insurance Executive Order yesterday. Similarly, the Ogun State government introduced a health insurance system for the formal sector, which includes civil servants, public servants, and organised private sector employees.
Prof. Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health, briefed journalists in Lagos on the core elements and goals of the transformative policy, emphasising that the effort is intended to drastically improve health outcomes for Lagos citizens.
Abayomi stated that the plan is consistent with the goal of the National Health Insurance Authority Act 2022, which is to make state-level social health insurance mandatory in order to attain Universal Health Coverage, or UHC.
“Social health insurance, which is widely practiced in various forms, has several socioeconomic benefits. It pools contributed funds and spreads risk over a wide group, reducing individual financial exposure while increasing protection.” Ogun establishes the Health Insurance Scheme.
Similarly, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who addressed at the plan’s official launch at the Obas Complex, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, stated that his government would pay 50% of the premium for each worker who registered under the system.
Abiodun, who was represented by his Deputy, Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, stated, “I hereby reassure all public servants that their well-being will remain a priority in the government’s development agenda, as demonstrated by our payment of a N100 million counterpart fund.”
