The launch of the highly regarded Holcim Awards for sustainable building has been announced by Lafarge Africa Plc., a major Sub-Saharan African building solutions provider and a member of Holcim, the world leader in innovative and sustainable building solutions.
The Holcim Awards, which were recently announced at a virtual press conference, honor and promote projects that blend excellent architectural design and sustainable building techniques. The Holcim Awards are now accepting entries.
The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Building, a separate non-profit organization, is in charge of organizing the Holcim Awards.
In order to participate in the 2023 edition of the awards, which is looking for real-world projects that are client-supported and demonstrate sustainable construction, professionals in Nigeria’s built and construction sector are being invited by the top building solutions firm.
The project must be in one of the following stages to be considered: detailed design, complete design, under construction, and completed construction. Construction cannot have begun before January 1, 2022.
The goal of the global awards competition, according to Khaled EL Dokani, CEO of Lafarge Africa Plc, is to highlight and honor cutting-edge ideas and practical examples that might quicken the pace of the trend toward sustainable construction.
Speaking at the Holcim Awards media conference organised by Lafarge Africa in Nigeria and held on March 1, 2023, the Head of Sustainability and Corporate Brand, Titilope Oguntugua said: “The competition features a total prize money of USD 1 million and is open for projects in architecture, building and civil engineering, landscape and urban design, materials, products, and construction technologies.
“The competition has two categories and is conducted in parallel as separate regional competitions across five regions: Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, Middle East Africa, and North America. USD 200,000 per region will be shared between winners of Holcim Awards Gold, Silver, Bronze, and acknowledgement prizes in every region.”
Therefore, Lafarge Africa invites all qualified engineers, architects, builders, planners, construction companies, and project owners to take advantage of this chance to make a name for themselves in the global construction industry by showcasing how their projects are promoting a more sustainable built environment.
Oguntuga further mentioned that independent expert juries will assess all submissions and then recommend a shortlist of winners.
The Holcim Foundation’s updated sustainable construction goals—uplifting places, a healthy planet, viable economies, and thriving communities—will be used to evaluate entries as a framework to spur system change.
The juries will be chaired by Tatiana Bilbao, Founder, Tatiana Bilbao Estudio (for region Latin America), Craig Dykers, Founding Partner, Snøhetta (North America), Lesley Lokko, Founder, African Futures Institute (Middle East Africa), Manit Rastogi, Founding Partner, Morphogenesis (Asia Pacific), and Belinda Tato, Founding member, Ecosistema Urbano (Europe).
Submitting entries in the competition is free using a web-based form available at www.holcimawards.org to provide information in English on the project design team, project summary, project sustainability profile including data points, as well as project images. There is no limit to the number of entries an individual/team can submit. The competition is open for entries until March 30, 2023, at 14:00 hrs UTC.
The award announcement event will take place at the 18th International Venice Biennale of Architecture: The Laboratory of the Future in November, and winners from all areas will be invited.
Over six international competition cycles spanning two decades, the Holcim awards, a groundbreaking global awards competition established in 2004, have acknowledged over 250 prize winners from 30,000 entries in 130 countries. The project has developed into the most significant competition for environmentally friendly building.
