Jerusalem Cemetery Desecrated with Donkey Head

by Tolulope Akinruli

Jerusalem, Israeli authorities took into custody a 35-year-old Israeli individual on Wednesday, alleging his involvement in the desecration of a Muslim cemetery situated in the annexed East Jerusalem’s Old City. Described by the police as “unbalanced,” the suspect was apprehended following reports indicating that he had violated the law and disrupted public order by hanging a donkey’s head at the cemetery.

The incident, which has evoked strong reactions, unfolded near the Golden Gate, the oldest walled gate in the Old City, significant in Jewish tradition as it is believed to open only upon the arrival of the messiah. Photographs circulating on social media depict the donkey’s head hanging from a fence at the cemetery, amplifying the gravity of the situation.

At the time of his arrest, the individual was reportedly carrying an axe, adding another layer of concern to the already disturbing act. Additionally, another suspect, believed to have aided in transporting the accused to the site, is also in police custody.

The Waqf Islamic affairs council condemned the act, stating, “A Jewish extremist slit the throat of a donkey today at the Golden Gate cemetery before hanging it over the Muslim graves there.” They emphasized the severe nature of the desecration, characterizing it as a violation of one of the key historic Muslim cemeteries in Jerusalem.

The cemetery’s proximity to the Al-Aqsa mosque compound further intensifies the significance of this incident, considering the site’s centrality to tensions between Palestinians and Israelis. The Al-Aqsa mosque compound, housing the Dome of the Rock, holds immense religious importance for both Muslims and Jews. It is Islam’s third holiest site after Mecca and Medina and lies directly above the Western Wall, the most sacred location where Jews are permitted to pray.

In recent years, visits by nationalist Jews to the Al-Aqsa compound have heightened tensions, perceived by Palestinians as provocations. The compound’s defense was notably cited by the Palestinian militant group Hamas as a primary motive for its October 7 attack on Israel, triggering a full-blown conflict between the two entities. This recent desecration of a Muslim cemetery adds another layer of complexity to the already delicate situation, underscoring the deep-rooted tensions surrounding religious sites in Jerusalem.
