• 2002 Kelly Clarkson Becomes the First American Idol

  The Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and Grammy Award winner made her first appearance on the reality TV show, which was co-hosted by Ryan Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman and judged by Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson. The popular show aired on Fox television for 14 seasons and has aired for 14 years.

• 1998 Google is founded

  Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google, which has become synonymous with the act of searching for information on the internet. When Page and Brin were doctoral students at Stanford University, it began as a research project.

• 1998 Who wants to be a Millionaire? Makes its Debut on British Television

  David Briggs, Mike Whitehill, and Steven Knight created the popular quiz game show, which awarded cash prizes to contestants for answering increasingly difficult questions, and it first aired on ITC. Until 2014, Chris Tarrant hosted the British version of the show. The show’s popularity in the United Kingdom prompted TV channels in other countries to adapt it for their audiences.

• 1888 Printing and imaging company Kodak, also known as Eastman Kodak Company, was founded by inventor George Eastman

  Eastman received the patent for the roll-film camera on the same day. The cameras, which came preloaded with rolls of film good for up to 100 photographs, changed the world of photography by making it more accessible to amateurs.

• 1870 Napoleon III ousted as Emperor of France

  Napoleon, France’s first elected president, assumed the title of Emperor in 1852. The coup occurred in response to Napoleon’s surrender during the Franco-Prussian War. He was exiled to England after being deposed and died on January 9, 1873.
