Honda to recall half a million vehicles due to fix seat belt problem

by Ikenna Ngere

The front seat belts on 500,000 Honda vehicles may not lock properly, therefore Honda is recalling those vehicles and Canada.

Some of the automaker’s best-selling models are included in the recall, including the 2017–2020 CR–V, 2018–2019 Accord, 2018–2020 Odyssey, and 2019 Insight. The Acura RDX from the 2019 and 2020 model years is also included.

In documents shared by US safety regulators on Wednesday, Honda claims that the surface coating on the buckling channel can erode over time.

At lower temperatures, the release button may shrink against the channel, causing friction and preventing the buckle from latching.

A driver or passenger may not be secured in a collision if the buckle doesn’t lock, increasing the risk of harm.

Honda said it had received 301 warranty claims over the issue from March 2019 to January 2023, but there have been no complaints of injuries brought on by the issue.

If necessary, dealers will swap out the buckle components or the release buttons for the front seat belts. As of April 17, owners will receive letters informing them.
