Describing Herbert Wigwe succinctly is akin to unraveling centuries-old mysteries or embarking on a fruitless quest. It’s a nuanced and intricate endeavor. Herbert, an exceptional businessman, met a tragic end alongside his wife and son in the United States, leaving a profound impact far beyond our borders.

But who was Herbert Wigwe? My perspective, shaped by our friendship and numerous interactions, offers a glimpse. We shared membership in the same local church, where I witnessed his devotion to spirituality, altruism, and church expansion, rooted in his strong Christian upbringing under his father, Elder Shyngle Wigwe, a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

Herbert’s unwavering commitment to prayer was complemented by a relentless work ethic, crediting all achievements to divine blessings. Hailing from Rivers State, our discussions often revolved around reshaping the state’s politics and advancing its development, despite his disinterest in political affairs, displaying astute insights into political dynamics.

He epitomized unyielding faith in Nigeria, viewing his allegiance to the country above any political affiliation. Herbert believed in leveraging business to address societal needs, exemplifying a staunch capitalist ethos aimed at societal betterment and wealth creation.

From transforming a distressed bank into a top-tier financial institution with assets exceeding N20.9 trillion to envisioning Wigwe University as Africa’s premier institution, Herbert’s bold dreams underscored his entrepreneurial prowess and tenacity. He mentored aspiring entrepreneurs and excelled across diverse sectors, leaving an indelible mark.

His ability to connect with people across diverse backgrounds, coupled with a knack for simplifying complexity, epitomized his charm. Herbert’s courage, patience, and relentless pursuit of excellence attracted admiration and adversaries alike, cementing his legacy as an original son of Port Harcourt and a visionary entrepreneur.
